A foursquare folly bearing a date stone of 1878 and the clasped
gauntlet of the Shuttleworth family. However the date stone is
believed to be misleading given that the exceptionally fine rubbed
brickwork is regarded to be far too good for the 1870s and its name
gives the clue to its origins.
In 1712, Queen Anne knighted the rich draper, Samuel Ongley, who
owned the estate at Old Warden, an event that provides the most
likely explanation for the building of the folly and its earlier
believed construction.
Works completed:
After consultation the works undertaken were a combination of
roof replacement and restoration using new traditional code 8 sand
cast lead. Bespoke lead cast rainwater goods were also designed
in-house and installed to reduce any further deterioration to the
structure from the elements. The design and installation of ach
part of the project was in keeping with the buildings original
style and appropriate to its historical standing.
